Lok Satta demands 'white paper' on discharge of flood water

Vijayawada, Oct 17 : Lok Satta Party President N Jayaprakash Narayana has demanded the state government to release a 'white paper' on the discharge of flood water from Srisailam reservoir between September 25 to October 5.

Addressing a press conference here last night after visiting the flood-affected villages and interacting with the district officials, Mr Narayana said the information about the inflow and outflow levels at Srisailam on hourly basis would be of great help for everyone to assess the situation in the event of similar floods in river Krishna.

''We can't rule out the possibility of similar flood with a discharge of about 25 lakh cusecs. As we can't prevent it, we have to be well-prepared and extra cautious,'' he said, adding that there was a need to strengthen the flood bunds (karakattas) further so that there would not be any fear of inundation even if the discharge of water touches the figure of 25 lakh cusecs.

He said there was a need to study the monsoon and prepare the farmers in advance for the sudden changes in the weather.

Referring to the island villages, he said there was an immediate need to shift the people residing in islands to the mainland by providing them housing facility.

Mr Narayana observed that some of them were expressing willingness to vacate the islands, but seeking assistance from the government in the form of a new house.

''Since the government is already providing financial help for the reconstruction of inundated houses, it can provide house sites to the residents of island villages in the mainland and shift them now itself,'' he said.

Expressing satisfaction over the flood-relief activities, the Lok Satta Chief said that many individuals and service organisations came forward to extend their helping hands to the flood victims .

''This is due to the comprehensive coverage given by the print and electronic media. This time, the media played a key role in alerting the public and the government as well,'' he added.

He announced that the party adopted Dakshina Cheruvu Lanka island village near Avanigadda and took the initiative for its reconstruction.
